The Shipibo people have been living on the rivers of the Peruvian Amazon for thousands of years. Currently numbering around 40,000, the group has traditionally included subgroups known as Conibo (south of Pucallpa), Shipibo (north of Pucallpa) and Shetebo (in a couple of northern pockets, now mixed). They are traditionally a fishing people, also producing gorgeous pottery and weavings from native cotton. They are found on the Ucayali, nearly all still speaking the Shipibo-Conibo language, between the towns of Bolognesi (below Río Tahuanía) south of Pucallpa and Orellana to the north.

| The Shipibo have always been great observers of nature. Their great knowledge of plants and fine practice of plant therapy for the treatment of disease is well-known throughout the western Amazon. |
